Georgia Tech vs. Duke - 2000

Georgia Tech vs. Duke – October 21, 2000

Duke: 10
Georgia Tech: 45

After dismantling the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, the Yellow Jackets would face their fourth straight opponent from North Carolina when the Duke Blue Devils arrived on the Flats in late October. Duke had yet to win a game at 0-7, and the Yellow Jackets would do little to help them in their quest for a victory.

Tech jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and basically shut the door on the game before it started. The lone blemish in the first stanza was that the opening drive stalled at the Blue Devil two yard line. But Luke Manget was true from 20 yards out and the Jackets took an early 3-0 lead. Joe Burns added a touchdown on Tech’s next drive from two yards out to increase the lead to 10-0. The third Ramblin’ Wreck score was setup when George Godsey hit Kelly Campbell on a 20 yard strike to the Duke 16 yard line. Burns capped off the drive for his second score on a 16 yard dive for the touchdown.

Duke added a field goal in the second quarter after a fake punt kept the drive alive, but Tech also scored when Godsey connected with Campbell on the deep ball and the Jackets led 24-3.

Sidney Ford added an 8 yard touchdown run with less than a minute to play in the half and the Jackets held a 31-3 lead at intermission.

The game saw only one score in the third quarter, that coming on the Yellow Jackets’ opening drive of the period when Campbell took Godsey’s option pitch to the end zone for a 38-3 lead.

Both teams would add touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Jackets scored when Sean Gregory exploded for a 58 yard touchdown run, while Duke required 18 plays to move 99 yards for their lone touchdown of the game. The Blue Devils reached the end zone on a 12 yard pass from D Bryant to Reggie Love, but their 10 points was not enough to complete with Tech’s 45 and the jackets would improve to 5-2 on the season.
