Georgia Tech at Navy - 2001

Georgia Tech at Navy – September 8, 2001

Georgia Tech: 70
Navy: 7

Georgia Tech travelled to Annapolis, Maryland with a 2-0 record and a #10 ranking to face the Navy Midshipmen in the third game of the 2001 season. Unexpected to the Yellow Jacket coaches and players, Tech would hand Navy its worst lost ever in football, defeating the Midshipmen in a 70-7 massacre.

The Jackets jumped all over the Midshipmen early, building a 42-0 lead in the first half. Beginning at its own 45, Tech marched 55 yards for the opening score with George Godsey connecting with Kelly Campbell for an 11 yard touchdown.

The Midshipmen then lost a fumble at their 40 yard line and Godsey quickly moved the Tech offense into scoring position. Joe Burns added an 8 yard touchdown shortly thereafter to give Tech a 14-0 lead.

Late in the first quarter, the Tech offense started again and marched 77 yards to extend the lead to 21-0 on a 2 yard score by Jimmy Dixon with 3:29 to play in the period.

Ricardo Wimbush brought the Yellow Jacket defense to the party when he returned Marshaun Minter’s fumble 25 yards for a touchdown on Navy’s ensuing drive. Cory Collins forced the fumble that setup the score.

Godsey saw a short day when he was pulled after adding two second quarter touchdowns. A sneak extended the lead to 35-0 and a 66 yard pass to Kerry Watkins notched the final points of the first half to give Tech a 42-0 advantage at intermission.

The Yellow Jackets added two touchdowns in each of the remaining quarters. Navy fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half to setup a one yard score for Dixon and backup quarterback Andy Hall connected with Levon Thomas on a 50 yard strike to make it 56-0 in the third quarter. Dixon scored once more from two yards out to begin the fourth quarter and Damarius Bilbo scored Tech’s final touchdown on a six yard run with little time remaining.

Navy’s lone score came on a one yard run by fullback Raheem Lambert late in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.
The Midshipmen would lose their next eight games to finish the season at 0-10
