Georgia Tech vs. Central Florida – September 18, 1999

Central Florida: 10
Georgia Tech: 41

Following a heartbreaking 41-35 loss to the top ranked Florida State Seminoles, the 12th ranked Yellow Jackets returned home to face the Central Florida Black Knights at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The Knights got off to a fast start, marching 80 yards on the game’s first possession to take a 7-0 lead with just 4 minutes gone in the opening period. The ten play drive was capped off by a 14 yard touchdown run by Edward Mack.

Tech would finally answer late in the first quarter when a drive started from the Black Knight 21 yard line after a bad punt. Sean Gregory and Joe Hamilton exchanged carries on three consecutive plays, the former scoring on a 7 yard run to knot the score at 7 apiece.

After a quick defensive stand, the Jackets got the ball back at their own 36. The Tech offense finally looked to be in full gear as it marched 64 yards in 11 plays for the go-ahead score. Hamilton raced into the end zone from 9 yards out for the touchdown, making it 14-7 in favor of the Jackets with twelve minutes left in the half.

Central Florida’s offense picked back up on the ensuing drive, as the Knights marched 53 yards to the Tech 22 yard line. The Tech defense finally made a stand, however, and the visitors were forced to settle for a field goal. Javier Beorlegui’s 39 yard kick was good, and the Black Knights pulled within four at 14-10 midway through the second quarter.

Tech would add another score just three minutes later. The Jackets drove 67 yards as Hamilton rushed for 29 and threw a 24 yard pass to Kerry Watkins in route to the end zone. Gregory added the score from two yards out to make the score 21-10.

Central Florida briefly threatened, but turned the ball over on downs at the Tech 32 at the end of the first half. The Jackets would take an 11 point lead to the locker room.
Tech received to begin the second half and promptly marched 68 yards in 8 plays to extend the lead to 28-10. Gregory carried the ball for much of the drive and Hamilton hit Russell Matvay from six yards out for the score.

From this point on, it was all Tech. The Jackets scored once more in the third quarter when Luke Manget added a field goal to extend the lead to 31-10. Hamilton then scored the game’s final touchdown on a 13 yard run in the fourth quarter, and Manget added three more points with roughly four minutes remaining to reach the final score of 41-10.

The Black Knights narrowly missed at Georgia the following week, dropping a 24-23 contest, and would go on to finish 4-7.
