On a cold and rainy November afternoon, the Georgia Bulldogs brought a 2-5-1 record to the Flats to face the 4-5 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Among those in the crowd were Eleanor and Anna Roosevelt (the wife and daughter of then presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt).
The wet conditions reaped havoc on both squads, as the field was a virtual mud bath. The two teams combined for a total of 68 yards from scrimmage, 5 first downs, 7 fumbles (3 lost), 3 interceptions, 3 turnovers on downs, and 38 punts (resulting in more than 1,000 yards of total punting).
The first four plays from scrimmage saw two fumbles and an interception. After being stopped on first down during the game’s first possession, Georgia’s Marion Gaston lost a fumble at the Bulldog 26 yard line. On the very next play, Tech’s W.A. Davis fumbled and recovered for a 15 yard loss. One play later, J.R. McArthur’s pass was intercepted by Byron Griffith, Jr.
Neither team showed any real threat to score. Tech’s best chance was ended by an interception after driving to the Bulldog 21 yard line. The Bulldogs got only slightly closer. In their nearest attempt, Georgia drove to the Tech 19 before throwing an incomplete pass on fourth down. The drive by the Bulldogs was the only time that either team entered the red zone during the game.
Each team chose to punt on third down several times; a decision which proved to be valuable for the Bulldogs on one occasion. Georgia’s Graham Batchellor was tackled for a 12 yard loss while attempting to punt on third down. This gave the Bulldogs a second chance, allowing them to successfully execute a 43 yard punt. The game ended in a 0-0 tie as Tech punted 35 yards to the Bulldog 10 yard line as time expired.
