Carrying a record of 3-3, the Ramblin’ Wreck would head to New Orleans to face the 2-2-1 Tulane Green Wave in front of 25,000 fans. While the Green Wave was not boasting a particularly impressive record, they had just defeated a previously unbeaten Mississippi State team the week prior, making for an intriguing matchup.

Tech opened the game with a 49 yard drive to take an early lead. The touchdown came on a two yard run by Billy Williams, making it 7-0 after the made extra point. Neither team produced much offense for the rest of the opening period, but Tech made a bit more noise in the second quarter. The Jackets took over at the Tulane 34 and mounted a drive that ended with Jack Peek’s touchdown run from within the 1 yard line. Tech would miss the extra point, however, and take a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Tulane’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter after Jim Lasseter recovered Ed Holtsinger’s fumble at the Yellow Jacket 34 yard line. The Green Wave scored two plays later on Dick Hoot’s touchdown run to pull with 6 at 13-7. Later in the period, the teams exchanged turnovers as Tulane lost two fumbles to Tech’s one. The final exchange gave the Jackets the ball at the Tulane 12 yard line. Holtsinger connected with Walter Kilzer shortly thereafter to extend the Tech lead to 20-7.

Tech would solidify the victory in the fourth quarter by adding three touchdowns. The first score came at the end of a 61 yard drive when George Mathews dove to catch Holtsinger’s pass in the end zone, thus extending the lead to 27-7. The final two scores came at the hands of the Ramblin’ Wreck defense, as Bert Aton and Joe Kelly each returned interceptions for touchdowns; the returns went for 45 and 35 yards, respectively.

In the weeks that followed, Tulane would go on to lose their final three games to Clemson, Notre Dame, and LSU to finish with a record of 2-6-1.
